Air Traffic Growth

Traffic throughput in 2017-18 reached 73.26 million passengers, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 5%. Aircraft movements also reached 423 436, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 3%. Cargo throughput was 4.98 million tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 7%.

During the year up to the end of March 2018, 124 airlines had operated direct services to and from Hong Kong, covering 222 cities/airports.

Services by Local Carriers

By the end of March 2018, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited operated direct services to 75 destinations worldwide, including a new destination to Tel Aviv for scheduled passenger services.

Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Limited operated direct passenger services to 46 destinations by the end of March 2018, including a new destination to Nanning.

AHK Air Hong Kong Limited (AHK) continued to operate direct all-cargo services in Asia. By the end of March 2018, AHK operated direct services to 12 destinations in Asia.

Hong Kong Airlines Limited operated direct services to 41 destinations by the end of March 2018, including new destinations to Los Angeles and Vancouver for passenger services.

Hong Kong Express Airways Limited (HKE) is the only low cost carrier in Hong Kong. By the end of March 2018, HKE operated direct services to 25 destinations, adding Kumamoto and Zhangjiajie to its network.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Carrier Limited, which commenced new all-cargo services during the year, operated direct services to 5 destinations in Asia including Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore and Taipei by the end of March 2018.

Metrojet Limited, TAG Aviation Asia Limited and Hong Kong Airlines Corporate Jet Management Limited continued to operate non-scheduled passenger services to cities around the world.

Sky Shuttle Helicopters Limited continued to operate non-scheduled passenger services between Hong Kong and Macao.

Heliservices (Hong Kong) Limited continued to operate local passenger charters and aerial work services.

Services by Non-Hong Kong Carriers

Seven non-Hong Kong operators commenced new scheduled passenger services during the year. Air Japan commenced services from Tokyo in June 2017. Virgin Australia International Airlines commenced services from Melbourne in July 2017. Air Seoul commenced services from Seoul in October 2017. JC (Cambodia) International Airlines commenced services from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and Cambodia Angkor Air from Siem Reap respectively in October 2017. Lanmei Airlines (Cambodia) commenced services from Sihanoukville in December 2017 and Shandong Airlines commenced services from Jinan in January 2018.

For scheduled all-cargo services, four non-Hong Kong operators commenced new services during the year. Air Cargo Global commenced services from Prague in July 2017. CargoLogicAir commenced services from London (Stansted) in August 2017. Western Global Airlines commenced services from Anchorage in September 2017 and National Air Cargo commenced services from Chicago in November 2017.

During the year, Kenya Airways suspended scheduled services to and from Hong Kong in October 20171.

During the year, CAD issued 146 operating permits to airlines for operation of scheduled services to and from Hong Kong, and processed around 5 000 applications for changes to the schedules. A total of 1 251 permits were also issued for the operation of charter services to, from and in Hong Kong.

1 MEGA Global Air Services (Maldives) Pvt. Ltd. and Orient Thai Airlines suspended their scheduled services in March 2017.
